Life at Wal-Mart
No, of all the places I have worked in my life, I was fortunate enough to be out of my job-hopping phase by the time Wal-Mart made it to the West Coast. Now, we've all seen the stories and news articles and it is fair to say that Wal-Mart is a double-sided coin. They have some things that Target (my favorite) doesn't have and sometimes, the prices are irresistibly low and like that Wall-Mart episode of South Park, you find yourself in bed thinking about sale items you saw hours earlier.
Of course, this is eclipsed by the fact that they have forced overtime on their workers, they promote holiday stampedes that bring fatal results, encourage their employees to go on public assistance to supplement their paychecks, are VERY BIASED to mid-level employees who happen to be women and the list goes on and on but this summary ties into my story.
Yesterday, I took my aunt to Wal-Mart as it was my first time since I saw this documentary on HBO about 5 yrs ago. It wasn't as crowded as I last remember but the essence of maniacal shopping was still in the air. I was knocked aside by little kids, little old ladies, strollers, walkers and even bored male family members who were just along for whatever. There was even a small famliy on an aggressive search for car air freshener ! Yep, you heard me correct - A WHOLE TEN MINUTES TO FIND THE RIGHT G*DAMN SCENT OF PINE!
As my aunt is getting along in age, I had to make sure that she left nothing behind at the cash register and other related things. When we got to the register, we were "greeted' by a checker who was all of six feet tall, close to 400 lbs and sported a pair of enormous ass tattoo sleeves. SHE had about the same vocabulary as Lurch Adams after he asked, "You rang?" Now, this particular store had a Mickey D's inside and is surrounded by Crack in the Box, House of Weiners and related places so her eating options are probably more limited than most. If sure if I took time out to read her arms, I'd probably know why she looked so gloom or didn't welcome us as people in general aren't shopping like they used to. Well, my aunt chose this as a discussion topic and I wanted to say, If you looked like her combined with the misfortune of working at Wal-mart in this economy, would you smile?
